Letter to Applicants

To All Potential Volunteer Attorney Trainees:

Please obtain a trainee application under the application tab or from the high school office, a debate/law coach, a school counselor, or a School Resource Officer along with a copy of the training schedule.

Independence Youth Court volunteer training requirements for new attorneys are as follows:

1. Complete the trainee application, have a parent sign it, and bring it to the first training session or email it to Youth Court at ejcyc@bssd.net before that date.

     2. Students must be in the 8th grade or higher.

     3. Students must have grades no lower than a C (proof will be asked of them).

     4. Students must have good school attendance records and no discipline violations.

If you meet the above-listed requirements, you are eligible to attend training for Youth Court. You will not be notified by Youth Court that you have been accepted into the program.  It is automatic that you are accepted as a volunteer, and you should appear for training on the first day.  To successfully complete Youth Court training, you must participate in all of the training sessions and pass a written Bar Exam.

*Training sessions held in person take place at the Independence Municipal Courtroom. For Youth Court purposes, “courtroom attire” is dark dress slacks (Not white, khaki, or jeans) and dress shoes. A dress shirt and tie for young men (a suit jacket also looks nice) and for young women a dress shirt or blouse (a blouse should not be too short, tight or revealing & a suit jacket is nice as well).  If the attire is not acceptable for court, you may be sent home to change or not be allowed to participate in that court session.

Thank you for your interest in the Eastern Jackson County Youth Court.  I look forward to meeting you at training.

Yours Truly,
